So what is this all about ? These pictures of people with grapes.
Last Saturday I joined the Urban Wine Company for their annual grape harvest. I didn’t know what to expect but set off at 7.00AM, on what seemed to become another sunny and hot day. I arrived at the industrial estate in Wimbledon at 8.00AM, a little worried with the look of things. I found myself at a dull car park, big words screaming loudly on parked trucks, the Urban Wine Co’s team based on the ‘dark’ side.
A little after 8:00AM though, people of all ages started pouring in with crates, boxes, bags or recycled butter tubs full of grapes. Red grapes, white grapes, small grapes, big grapes, frozen grapes, fresh grapes, kilo’s and kilo’s of them. It is all to become part of the mix in the end. The mix that will be Chateau Tooting 2011 ! A rose wine, made with grapes grown in the urban gardens and balconies of Greater London. I noticed a lot of grape envy amongst the crowd, yours is bigger than mine type of thing. One man even displayed signs of separation anxiety. He clearly found it hard to drive off in an empty car, leaving his beloved harvest behind, quietly giving it one last little wave.
